This is a very serious subject. Domestic violence is dangerous and touches the core of the community. It is important that victims of domestic violence file a report with the police every single time it happens. The police understand the emotional and psychological components of violence within relationships and the consequences. Our experience is that for every day a victim stays in that relationship it becomes worse.

The Police are eager to stop aggression and take their role in this matter very seriously. It should never progress beyond a first aggression. Aggression is never a token of love and it is not normal. If you love somebody, you don’t abuse them! It must stop!

Domestic violence refers to violence within a relationship . Other examples of domestic violence are: Violence between (ex) spouses, child abuse, parental abuse, or abuse by friends or family,in addition to posed threats or vandalism.

What are the possible consequences?

The most immediate consequences of domestic violence are physical and/or mental pain. Other serious consequences can surface several years later. There is a connection between domestic violence and aggressive behaviour committed by children. Experiencing abusive behaviour in the home environment gives a child the impression that this type of behaviour is acceptable. We know this isn’t true.As a result, children can eventually become real bullies at school. Their grades might decrease or they might isolate themselves from others. In adulthood they often have difficulty relating to others and raising their own children.

Can domestic violence be reported to the police?

Yes, of course. Nobody should bear domestic violence alone and the police are there to be of help! It is relevant to point out here  that proving and charging someone of domestic violence is extremely difficult. The best evidence against the suspect can be collected when there are witnesses. For example: did  neighbours hear screams or see wounds? Is anybody else aware of the situation? Has a doctor been involved for consultation and/or the treatment of injuries ? The police need as much information as possible in order to start an investigation and the victim’s statement has greater credibility when supported by those of witnesses.

Unwilling to file a report?

Not all victims of domestic violence are willing to file a report. Nevertheless,it is advisable in these circumstances to confide in a trusted person. It might not be general knowledge ,however, there are established organisations on St. Maarten that can help and at the very least offer a listening ear. Safe Haven (www.safehavensxm.org) is one and the Peridot Foundation (www.peridotsxm.org).is another. They are specialized in helping those who are confronted with domestic violence.
